Small Business Safety Training Basics

November 20, 2014 by Zara A Leave a Comment

Safety training is critical for your small business – without it, your business may not survive. These days, there are a lot of workplace accidents that arise from improper training. This can eventually start to result in higher and higher healthcare costs and you may find yourself paying off lawsuits. Eventually, this will start to have a major effect on your bottom line. As a small business, you are already in a precarious place – you don’t want to make it worse by not having a safe environment for your employees. Plus, having a safer environment will make your employees more productive and morale will be higher too. Here are some small business safety training basics.

  1. Have a plan for implementing safety training. Before you implement a safety training program at your workplace, you want to have a plan and a blueprint set up before you start training. If you train without a plan, there is a good chance that the plan won’t be as successful.
  2. Don’t make your employees pay for safety training. It is also important to not hold safety training after work – when your employees are not on the clock. If you are going to train your employees about all the safety dangers at work, you want to do so during business hours. Of course, you don’t want to take away from the important tasks that need to get done for your business, so you may want to separate your employees into groups – or organize the training sessions per department. This can streamline the entire safety training process.
  3. Hire a company that specializes in safety training and consulting. On top of creating a plan, you may also want to hire a consultancy group to administer the safety lessons. When it comes down to it, a safety training consultancy group will have the experience, the know-how and the tools needed to properly train your employees. Plus, they will be able to establish a system for safety in your business that employees can adhere to after the training process is over.
  4. Create a book of protocols that ensure that your business remains safe and sound. One of the best ways to ensure that employees stick to their safety training is to have a protocol book. It may be smart to make this book available for all of your employees to read. If you have a factory or if your office has a lot of dangers, the protocol may wind up saving the lives of your employees. Plus, your employees can reference the book whenever they have questions.
  5. Place safety banners around your office or workspace. One of the smartest safety training tips is to create and place banners around your workplace. There is a good chance that a protocol book won’t get read that often. However, if you have safety banners around your office, they will be hard to miss. Plus, if an employee sues for damages, it will be easy to prove that you did everything you could to warn employees about the dangers. In the end, safety banners may just save your business and lives.
