How to Manage Your Monthly Credit Card Spending

January 13, 2015 by Amy L Leave a Comment

If you are like most people, there is a good chance that you have trouble monitoring and managing your credit card spending. Indeed, this is a common phenomenon, but for a certain percentage of people, this disorganization can lead to credit card debt and other financial woes. The truth is that credit cards are designed to make spending easy, so it can be quite simple to let things get out of hand. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to manage your spending. Here is how to manage your monthly credit card spending.

  1. Keep an eye on your spending. Of course, the best way to manage your credit card spending is to keep an eye on your spending. You may not be able to do this in the moment, but you will be able to view your statements at the end of the day. Keeping an eye on your balance and statement will help you curb your spending.
  2. Lower your spending limit. Another way to manage your spending is to lower your spending limit. Usually, a credit card will give you a minimum that you are allowed to spend on your card during a given month. If the spending limit is high, you may be encouraged to spend more money. This is why you want to lower that limit. Once you reach that limit, you will not be able use the card. Sometimes, your spending limit may be above and beyond your means.
  3. Find the card that is right for you. Of course, you also want to find the credit card that fits your lifestyle. Some cards may have too many features that are expensive and encourage more spending. If you are on a budget, this is the last thing you want. You can actually visit CreditCardXpo to browse through different credit card options to find the right one. Ideally, you want to do your research and you want to shop around for a credit card – you may also want to seek financial advice from your family and peers.
  4. Only put necessary charges on your card. If your credit card accrues air miles or other reward points, you probably want to reserve your credit card for those purchases. You can put other purchases on your debit card. If you use your credit card for everything, you may wind up spending more money. Moreover, your spending could get out of hand. In addition, you don’t want to spend money just to accrue bonuses – this is another way to let your spending get out of hand.
  5. Always pay your bill on time. On top of everything, you also want to pay your credit card bill on time. If you don’t pay your bill on time, you will not only risk getting penalties, but you may have interest to pay off, which can put you in a bad financial situation. In the end, you want to mark your calendar or set up automatic payments so that your bill is always paid.
